How To Prevent Ticks in Your Yard

by Jeff Ronhaar
One of the true pleasures of summer is digging your toes into a healthy green lawn.

Seeing your kids and pets playing in the grass is always a joy. But every year it seems like we hear more about ticks and Lyme disease.

We want to share some quick facts about ticks, and give you some ideas of how you can fully enjoy your outdoor space without worrying about them.

Ticks love to hang around in wooded areas and brush areas that border lawns and yards. Ticks seek out “questing” locations that allow them to sit atop a grass blade at the ideal height to latch onto a passing person or animal. Grass height over 4 inches roughly 10 cm) is ideal tick habitat.

4 degrees Celsius is the temperature when ticks become active, but the worst time of year is June and July. By August, ticks will move back down near the soil profile to keep cool from intense heat. Then they return to their questing behaviour when it becomes cooler.

We have specialized spray for dealing with ticks. This treatment can be applied at any time, although treating ticks in the Spring is ideal as it targets the younger ticks (nymphs). A fall treatment is also a great way to knock back the populations for the coming season.

If you're dealing with a tick infestation or you want to get your place treated before the ticks get bad, please give us a call.

Jeff Ronhaar, Head Coach at Jeff's Outdoor

Jeff's Outdoor began when an enterprising 14-year-old decided to turn paper route customers into lawncare customers. Jeff started with one mower and never looked back.

Jeff grew up always wanting his own way. He claims he rarely got it. That's debatable. He did get plenty of lessons about hard work, determination, and, above all, treating people right.
